It’s time for another tote! Tote #2 of the 21 Totes Project has a Valentines Day theme since February is just around the corner. By the way, uh, how did THAT happen?
I used my Silhouette Cameo for this project. I designed the cutout design and cut it out with the Silhouette. The gray fabric is backed with Heat n Bond lite and I fused it to the red background. To break it up a bit I cut out slightly larger hearts in white. I slid them under the gray overlay so that they fused in place as well–this is the panel on the right, below:
The back panel on the left is made from the remaining gray hearts that were left over from the initial cut. Because these are loose pieces, I had to position them on the background fabric, which is a little tricky to do without a little help. So, I created a freezer paper template to do this easily. I created a .svg cutout for the silhouette made of a grid of hearts slightly larger than the ones earlier and then cut that out with freezer paper.
Then I ironed the freezer paper onto the fabric and placed the hearts into the openings and ironed them in place.
Next up, the sewing. Heat n bond holds the pieces in place for awhile, but isn’t a long-term solution for a bag, so I did some straight line quilting and added a 1″ handle. Then I made the lining and used a simple boxed-bottom construction. The work was in the designing and quilting, but the construction was a snap!

So that’s Tote #2. Tons of fun to put together. I hope you like it.
I’ve also been working on an easy pattern for a super easy tote for beginners. It’s about done, then I’ll get it tested and out for you!
Until that is ready, there will be another tote. Next up is an fun, easy tote with a dart construction. Until then….
